Nature Reserves
The land that rises...
The Ängskär nature reserve consists of the two capes Klubben and Bondskäret. At the very tip of Klubben is the Ängskär navigation mark, evidence of the importance Ängskär harbour once had. The protected location made it an important shipping harbour for the iron produced at Lövstabruk during the great regional ironwork expansion in the 1700's and 1800's. The harbour ceased to exist when the land evolution made it impossible for heavily loaded ships to exit. The land evolution has greatly changed the landscape and its resources. Hållnäs still rises about six centimeters every ten years.

The four story warehouse built in 1758 is the only building remaining since iron shipping from Hållnäs ceased in 1906.

Bondskäret offers an ancient agricultural landscape with fields, pastures, meadows and barns. The small meadows are enclosed within traditional wooden fences and cattle graze here to help the growth of rare orchids and herbs.

In the early summer the floral splendour is enormous and contains orchids such as dactylorhiza sambusina, epipactis helleborine and dactylorhiza maculata. The latest Ice Age deposited calcium from the bottom of the Baltic Sea here, making the soil especially favourable for these rare orchids and herbs.

Ängskär nature reserve was created to promote outdoor activities and preserve rhe unusual characteristics of the area.
