Times gone by
... going somewhere ...
Forestry and farming wee the earliest means of making a living
in Hållnäs, and the old agricultural landscape with
its small fields and pastures is still maintained here. The
stone walls and mounds are signs of the labour that went into
clearing the land.
On the nothern part of the penisula lies Hållen
village, from which Hållnäs takes its name. One of
Sweden's largest collections of stone mounds is located here
and shows the enormous amount of work demended of the farmers.
At the Hembyggdsgården museum in Edvalla
you can see examples of local crafts, tools and vehicles as
well as historical photographs.
The fishing villages were created by farmers who
built toolsheds for their fishing gear, in the days when fishing
was still a supplement to farming. The herring has always been
important to the local economy andwhen the fishing industry
was at its hights here, more than 200 fishermen mede their living
from herring.

"Im
shure there are good plasic boats too, but they're just like
plasic bags - a completely unnecessary invention".
At Holmströms shipyard, around 100 boats where built up till
the end of the 1970's. The boats are considered unsinkable and
are beatifully crafted. |
